Six Border teams entered the BGA Team Competition to decide who would represent the Borders in the Scottish Final at Eastwood in Ayrshire. Simon Fairburn got the tournament under way in spectacular way by clearing the green of the 152 yard green and ending up into Leithen Water, behind the hole. This double bogey cost him but he fought back to go to the turn at two over. Two under on the back nine gave a level round of 70, but, of course 2 strokes are added. This is what happens when you are a plus golfer. David Gillie and Jackson Berry added to the team score with 77 and 76 for a total of 223.
In the same groupings, Kris Hobkirk also shot a level par round of 70, he also had a double bogey on a par 3 but this was on the 7th hole. S Waldie and Alan Turnbull made Peebles total up to 224, one too many.
Everything in the Hawick team was equal with all three scores from Keith Beattie, Greg Baillie and Paul Reilly 76 for a total of 228 for third place. Paul was a little unfortunate as his group was penalized for playing off the wrong tee. The 6th hole and the 15th holes have separate tees, it is a nine hole course. The group went to the 15th tee and as they were strangers to the course played their tee shots only to be told when they were down the fairway that they use the wrong tee by another group, They returned to the tee, penalised 2 shots and recorded and an 8, 7 and a 6 for Edward Turner (Langholm) which was technically a birdie. He played 4 tee shots, I, from the wrong tee, 2 which might have been lost, a provisional, which was lost and provisional 2 which was not needed as the first ball was in play.
Kelso, Innerleithen and Langholm finished in that order with an unfortunate Langholm team only fielding 3 players, thanks to them for making the effort for coming to play. There are teams that would have not bothered.
The tail end of the draw got a little wet but the BGA thanks the players for making the effort. It is the players and the clubs that make the BGA not the BGA making the players and clubs.
Thanks to the two ladies who served food for the players – they serve a great bowl of lentil soup.
Thanks to the Club for all the help, especial Noel and Neil, I know that two for the Langholm players are looking forward to their next visit.
As there were only 3 players in the zone out of a field of 23 the SS for the day was +1 at 70.
