Result of the BGA Spring Competition played at Duns Golf Club 29th April 2018
The weather was cloudy with threat of rain when the first pair teed off for the first of the BGA Competitions. A field of 34 golfers divided into three sections and with points awarded for the Order of Merit meant there was plenty at stake. Graham Clark and Derek Bates, shall I say a veteran pairing of well-established Duns Golfers led the field off. All the pairing was two ball so the field moved along smoothly.
Rain came on for a while but soon disappeared and the Sun came out now and again. Martin Aitchison, who was in the third group, set an early target with 41 stableford points. This was with a no score on the 4th hole, a par 3. As the day wore on nobody came close to Martin’s score until Simon Fairburn also would have returned 41 points but as he plays off +2, two points were deducted and his net score was 39 points. Simon returned 7 birdies, including two 2’s.
The other player to score Two 2’s was Stewart Elliot of Newcastleton who was one of a party of 9 from Newcastleton. As the club has only 30 male members, this is an amazing entry. The BGA thanks Newcastleton for their support. For all the golfers in the Borders, why not give the club a visit some time and see what a small club can do with limited resources.
There were eleven two’s paying out £6 per two. The BGA wish to thank Duns Golf club for the use of the course and comments were very favorable on the condition of the course considering the weather we have had. We also thanked the club house staff for looking after the players.
