President’s Trophy

Ten Border Clubs attended the President’s Opening Day at Lilliardsedge Golf Club on Sunday 9th April. The invitation was to Club Captain and Vice-Captain but if neither were available a replacement was allowed.

The day was dry but windy, just enough to test the players. Four ball better ball stableford was the format with preferred lies. A shotgun start, without the shotgun got the players away at 1.00.

Walking the course to see if there were any rules infringements such as puting the ball in front of the marker, after marking it to the side. The problem was that most of the field could not bend down far enough to mark the ball. Estimations were required; it is a fun day after all.

I had much pleasure in pulling up a high ranking official who was teeing off in front of the markers. The word I heard most from the players was “bandit”. This was written before the scores come so we will let our readers decide if anyone fits the bill.

I have sympathy with high handicappers, they have only to hit one good shot and the shout comes. All the bad shots are forgotten.

Walking round the course, I saw many golf balls planted in the wetlands on the right of the third hole, there should be a good harvest next year.

Only one “2” was recorded and this was returned by the Peebles pair of W Forsyth and F Lowther. The hardest hole was the long 16th, a par 4 into the wind. Most pairs were happy to come off with a 6.

Overall the course played very well, the wind made some of the holes difficult but apart from one or two wet patches the fairways were firm and the players got a bit of run. The greens putted well and a good day was had by all.

The scores were counted while the players were enjoying the carvery and the results are as follows:
